Nigerian Army Officer Makes History as Deputy Force Commander in MINURSO

In a historic moment, Brigadier General Gabriel Olufemi Esho has been appointed as the Deputy Force Commander of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO). This marks a significant milestone for Nigeria and the African continent, as Brigadier General Esho becomes the first Nigerian to hold such a position within MINURSO. His appointment ceremony saw him take over from Commodore Faustina Boakyewwa Anokye from the Ghana Navy.

Brigadier General Esho, originally from Ondo State in western Nigeria, has shown unwavering commitment to serving others since a young age. Graduating from the prestigious Nigerian Defense Academy with honors in Mathematics and a masters degree in Strategic Studies, his exceptional leadership qualities and strategic military operations expertise have led to this remarkable achievement.

MINURSO was established by the UN Security Council in 1991 with the primary objective of overseeing the referendum on self-determination for Western Sahara.
